We often want to help those who we love or care about, including those who are in trouble with the law. However, in Oklahoma, harboring a fugitive is a serious crime, even when you do not have bad intentions.
What Does it Mean to Harbor a Fugitive?
In Oklahoma, “harbor” has a broad definition and means to feed, lodge, clothe, arm, equip, harbor, aid, assist, or conceal.
Further, a “fugitive” is not just a prison escapee, like in the movies. Harboring any person who has just committed a felony, an outlaw, fugitive from justice, or any person seeking to escape arrest constitutes the felony of harboring a fugitive. Okla. Stat. tit. 21 § 440
Anyone found guilty of harboring a fugitive may spend up to 10 years in the State Penitentiary.
